Media statement by Steven Sim, MP for Bukit Mertajam
21 MARCH 2018 | KUALA LUMPUR
On 19 March 2018, I asked in Parliament about the status of the flood aid promised by the Prime Minister for the Penang November 2017 flood victims.
Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Shahidan Kassim said that only RM5,467,250 will be given to 21,869 families in Penang with each family receiving only RM250. The money were only given beginning 11 March 2018, four months after the disaster in November.
For the record, the Penang state government has distributed RM36,647,100 to 52,353 families in December 2017, just one month after the disaster. Each family received RM700 from the Penang state government.
In 2015, the federal government gave RM500 to flood victims in Kelantan and Pahang.
On 7 November 2017, when Prime Minister Najib Razak visited Penang, he promised to extend similar aid to Penang.
In February 2018, Shahidan Kassim announced in Perlis that the federal government will be giving flood aid of RM500 to each family in 10 states all over the country.
Yet Penang flood victims only received RM250.
Even then, not all affected families received the federal aid.
When I requested in Parliament for the federal government to increase its aid to RM500, the Minister replied that the government did not have enough budget for this.
This is not only disappointing but shocking at the same time.
Barisan Nasional is spending millions of ringgit in Penang producing professionally-done fake news videos, paying for newspaper advertisements, and waging poster war to bring down the Penang state government, and yet, they said they have no money to assist Penang flood victims!
Why are Penangites being treated as second class citizens? Penangites pay our taxes too, unlike Jho Low and Riza Aziz.
We are not asking for them to match the contribution by the Penang state government, but only for them to match the flood aid given to victims in other states as promised by the Prime Minister.
