KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the public still have a chance to take part in the 2018 Asia-Pacific Masters Games (2018 APMG) in Penang which will take place from September 7-15 where locals can pit their skills, abilities and strength against overseas participants.
Penang Asia-Pacific Masters Games Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Linda Geh said that as many as 3,500 participants have already submitted their forms with the closing date for participation this August 7. The participants will take part in 22 different types of sports that will be contested.
“We are hoping that our target of attracting up to 5,000 participants will be achieved because members of the public can take part, with the average age of participants being 30 years old except for swimming where the age limit beginning from 25 years old.
“What is unique about this Games is that each and every participant will take part according to their respective age groups, and the oldest participant is an 86 year old from New Zealand who will be taking part in the 10 kilometer run,” said Linda during the launching ceremony for the Games official apparel here at Wisma UFL earlier today (Thursday).
Apart from participation from members of the public, Linda said that the Games has also attracted former athletes including former national archer Cheng Chu Sian who was among the early birds to register.
Meanwhile, deputy sports minister, Steven Sim said that he believes the Games will be able to attract members of the public to take part in sporting activities.
“Even though the Games takes place during the same period as the Malaysia Games (Sukma) which is from September 14-22, I do not feel that the Games will suffer in terms of attracting members of the public to take part.
“This Games not only involves professional athletes as it is more of a sporting event that is also for members of the public,” he said.
Earlier, sporting goods and outdoor activities equipment distributor, Universal Fitness & Leisure (UFL) Sdn Bhd through the brand FBT, announced that it will be supplying the official apparel of the 2018 APMG which can be obtained through the website, www.apmg2018.com.
